Software and Recommended Downloads Please select the area you want to view: Internet Browsers The two main internet browsers available for Microsoft Windows at the moment that I recommend are Internet Explorer (you probably have it anyway) and Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer is Microsoft's browser, and comes as default with all distributions of Windows so chances are you already have it. They have released the Public Beta of Internet Explorer 7, so if you would like to download it for free, click here. But be warned! It is still a Beta product, and therefore is likely to crash from time to time, and some features may not be fully working, or might not work at all! Mozilla Firefox is the alternative to Internet Explorer. It is an OpenSource browser, and comes with many lovely little features including tabbing, RSS syndication and you can even have profiles! It is a good idea to have both browsers on your computer at the same time, it does no harm, and some sites view better in one than the other. For instance, my site doesn't view very well in Firefox because of its table layout, but Internet Explorer is perfect for it. Security Software CCleaner This software is highly recommended.
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal This software is highly recommended.
Ad-Aware Personal provides advanced protection from known data-mining, aggressive advertising, Trojans, dialers, malware, browser hijackers, and tracking components. This software is downloadable free of charge. There are several different versions available, but for the average home user, the Personal edition will do and costs nothing to download (whereas the other editions require a subscription).

AVG Anti-Virus AVG Free Edition is available free-of-charge to home users! AVG Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only.
Personally I recommend going with another Antivirus package, I've used this one myself on my desktop and didn't find it as user friendly or as reliable as other packages, although it doesn't slow down your computer as much as Norton or McAfee... probably because it lacks the features. SpyBot - Search & Destroy This software is highly recommended. Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging.
